When the sky became a compass
Navigation shows the practical power of observing and measuring.
An angle above the horizon
A mariner’s astrolabe measured the altitude of the Sun or a suitable star. With the relevant tables and method, observations could help determine latitude. Measurement required technique, not simply recognising a constellation.
Different questions
Where am I? and What will happen to me? are different questions. The navigational use of celestial observations does not establish that the same objects predict personal events.
The discipline to borrow
Take the navigator’s habit into daily reflection: record your reference point, check your assumptions and correct your course. A useful map helps you choose; it does not choose for you.
