France: a manuscript sky

Read a cultural inheritance through the books that carried it.

A library as a crossroads

The BnF’s presentation of Notre-Dame manuscripts places astrology within a history of inherited and translated learning. A manuscript collection reveals readers’ interests, not a single belief shared by everyone.

Before borrowing a symbol

Look at the catalogue, the date and the surrounding text. A diagram can explain a calculation, organise a lesson or illustrate a claim. Its appearance alone does not tell us which.

Our editorial choice

We prefer a traceable object to a vague claim of ancient wisdom. Let the archive complicate the story: careful reading makes the past more interesting, not less mysterious.

Sources & further reading
