Constellations: the stories between stars

A pattern is a human reading of the sky, not a physical thread between stars.

Pictures and distances

Stars that appear beside one another can lie at very different distances. The lines on a chart help us recognise a pattern; they are not structures joining those stars.

Many ways of seeing

Different cultures have read different figures into the sky. Modern astronomy recognises 88 constellations. This shared reference system does not replace the richness of older sky traditions.

A sign is not a constellation

In tropical astrology, a sign is an equal thirty-degree division of the ecliptic. A constellation is an astronomical sky region. Sharing a name does not make them interchangeable.

Sources & further reading

Historical evidence, astronomical observation and symbolic interpretation are different kinds of knowledge. We keep their boundaries visible.
