Reading the sky / m00n editorial
Your first map of the night
Start with a place, a time and one recognisable pattern.
Set the scene
A planisphere is a rotating map of the sky. Choose one for your latitude, then align its date and time. Check whether its instructions require standard or daylight-saving time.
Find your bearings
Identify the horizon and cardinal directions before looking overhead. Start with a conspicuous star pattern, then compare its neighbours with the map. A map is easier to read slowly than all at once.
Keep an observing note
Record your location, time, cloud cover and one thing you recognised. A dark, safe observing spot helps. Never point binoculars or a telescope at the Sun without appropriate specialist equipment.

Historical evidence, astronomical observation and symbolic interpretation are different kinds of knowledge. We keep their boundaries visible.
